End of summer vacation

Had an amazing three days hiking the area around Burr Oak. Did a full lap of the lake with Mal Gal and Meeko. Wish it could have been longer, it was fantastic. Some beautiful views, silly times, and awesome shennanigans.

I went back to Cincy this weekend, and saw a guy hitchhiking on the side of the road, and picked him up. Come to find out he had 300 lbs of gear and was riding from Broome County, NY, all the way to Louisville, KY. That is almost a 600 mile bike ride, probably more since having to take back roads. He could only go about 30 miles a day, max, and I gave him a ride to Cincy.I dropped him off with a buddy of mine, Adam, who kindly gave him a place to sleep, and a ride to Louisville the next day. He was a great guy, and I hope the best for him.

Broecker Farm

Went to photograph a christmas tree farm today. I wasn't expecting much from it, I mean what all can there be about cutting down a tree right? Well I got there and this man, Creighton Broecker still owns and helps run the farm, and has been doing so for 60 years. The trees behind him are ones that he planted when he first opened the tree farm in 1950, and they are huge. It was an amazing sight, and a pleasant surprise on the assignment to meet such a kind man, and see some of the work he is so proud of.

Went and hung out with Adam and his son Andrew going on a deer hunt today. It was Andrew's first time out to get a deer, but didn't see a single deer all day. I still enjoyed myself, its great to work on a story that you enjoy, and I was beginning to lose sight of that. It was a peaceful experience, and reminded me why I enjoy hunting quite a bit. The respect that hunters have for the animal and understanding that they have for what they do is humbling to say the least.

Finally shot a food picture I was proud of. Who knew? These tables were a deep maroon, and after taking a couple pictures, I checked my exposure and histogram just to be sure, only to see that they were not coming out. They were just all black, so I decided to play around with it and the reflection. Thank you awesome window light.

Hooray, I have made a 100 posts now! Anywho, I shot swimming and diving for the first time today. Always kind of excited to shoot something new, and this challenged me for sure. It was way more difficult to shoot than I thought it would be, and on top of that I couldn't figure out the roster and had to chase people down like crazy to get names. It was still fun though, even though it got stressful at points.

On a random whim I went with Emily and Hollyn to the Sleeping Bear Dunes. It was awesome, tiring, very cold, and beautiful all wrapped up into one quick trip. I think that is the end of all possible camping trips of the year, which is sad, but I am sure we will find more adventures to get into.

I have been archiving lately. Digging through all my old pictures and hating myself for not making a workable intelligent archive until now. So there is tons of fun going through about 2 years worth of images that are scattered to who knows where. I have come across some goofy ones that I forgot about, the good files of ones I could never hope to find, and ones like the one above where I am glad I have a camera.

Its been right about a year now since Dr. Bauer died, and I am glad I have this picture to remember that night the entire school mourned his death. He was an amazing man in more ways than I could put into words, and was a solid foundation when I needed it most during my senior year at his school. I always regret never having taken a picture with him, but even though I don't have that, at least this can remind me how much he meant to so many people, and that I was not the only person whose life he affected so greatly.

Went to Athens for the opening weekend and drug Jared along for the ride. Got an opportunity to visit some great friends and meet some new ones. Chilled all day, rode bikes, jumped off a bridge, unicycled, found 20 bucks, danced like crazy, reminisced, and made new memories. It was a weekend that was a welcome change of pace from the daily grind of Michigan. Wish that it could have lasted longer.

Serial Killer Suspect

Got to cover some crazy stuff today. A serial killer suspect was brought into Flint today after having allegedly committed a string of stabbings against black males. I got a front row seat. This was the first time I have ever covered really crazy intense news and had to be in a press corral of a couple dozen people. It was a stressful, intense and crazy experience to say the least. I also got really lucky with some access too. I got to be around in the jail as he was getting processed as well as dropped off and get some photos that most of the time you never get the chance to have access too. Dosen't hurt to ask for it, sometimes it works out if the guy in charge likes you.

First Day

Just got done with my first day of work. It wasn't overly hard, more so of just extremely frustrating. They are a very web oriented newspaper, so I am still trying to learn all the systems and methods they use, it is pretty daunting. Besides that though, I still get to wake up and go shoot. Today I shot the opening of a new park and got a couple that I like, even though they are pretty damn similar.

Athens has been a blast beyond expectations the past couple of weeks, and I will sorely miss it the next six months while I am in Michigan. Still got a few days left, going to make the most of em.

My Mom

Mother's day is one of those holidays that I used to never be able to remember. It would come sneaking up, seemingly nothing fun between Easter when I would get too much chocolate and watch movies, and the Fourth seemed like a dream in the distant future. March invites in spring, April goes by too fast, and then I get a chastising call from my Grandma to not forget about mother's day this weekend. Damn that holiday, always came out of nowhere and stuck me with having to figure out a way to ride my bike somewhere without Mom knowing about, get her something she would like, and all only if I had money from selling newspapers. Sometimes I would space on it completely and end up just making a card up that day with a half an hour and a box full of goodies.

Mother's day was always spent kissing up to Mom, being a good little kid, and making sure she had a great day. I can still remember my dad bringing home a bouquet of yellow roses, my Mom's favorite flower, and putting them on the countertop in the kitchen. She would always love to see them, and try her hardest to make them live as long as possible. Sometimes she would barely get the day off, if at all. We were busy little kids, and Mother's day always seemed to fall perfectly on a weekend that I had a soccer tournament, or I would have plans with friends and neglect my Mom. She never complained, she never made a big deal out of it or a fuss either way. If she got the day off she would revel in it, and if not it was just another day.

Now, it is not a holiday. It is something that I can't forget, no matter how badly I want to. Its a day that I wake up and don't want to get out of bed. Its a day that I catch myself dialing home, and hanging up before anyone picks up, quickly realizing the person I want to talk to isn't going to be there. Its a day that I find myself pulling through, trying to put on a fake smile, hoping no one mentions Mother's day to me. Always buy a yellow rose for her, and put it in a cheap vase from Goodwill, hoping that someday I can afford something better than that to attribute to her memory. And then I break down. I can't handle days like this, days dedicated to the person that I love so much, and can't give a hug to. The person that still influences me to this day, even though I haven't heard her voice in nearly three years. The memories come back like a flood, learning to count in the back of Jo-Ann fabrics, watching Golden Girls until we had every episode memorized, waking up in the middle of the night to her painting the kitchen bright green, playing Bingo in the middle of the winter when we got off school, digging through her old paintings she made years before, snuggling up in a quilt she had just finished making, holding her hand for the last time. This day is always filled with happy memories, but sometimes they can be a little too hard to handle.

I will never forget the first time I opened the chest that she kept everything my brother and I made for her in. The chocolates I bought for her weren't in there, the fun kitchen gadgets, the little figurines, or any of the other gifts I got her. But all of the cards were. Every single one.

My friends whipped up some awesome food, but the only picture of it I got Lindy looked kind of scary holding a huge knife and told me not to put up, so I didn't. Your welcome Lindy. It has been a while since I posted and for that I apologize. Been quite busy as of late, and not taking as many pictures as I would like, but should be changing that here soon. But here are some shennanigans that I have gotten into the past month or so. Went on a trip hiking and visit D.C. with my buddy Kevin. That was a great time and was a great way to get introduced to hiking. Came back to Athens and got to catch up with a few buddies that I had not seen in months. Glad to see their goofy faces again. Don't know what to say really, it has been a long and hectic month, but I could not ask for anything better.

Decided to go home this weekend. My brother got older, big 23, and now has more than enough ice cream cake all to himself. My grandparents and aunt came in to visit too. It was a good time, and unfortunately I wasn't really in the mood to take pictures. But it was nice to see them again, and give them the gifts that I got for them from Scotland and continually forgot to give them. Got to sample on the beer dad and I made a while back, its almost done carbonating, not quite, but almost there. Its pretty tasty if I do say so myself.

This is Vansickle. He is a great friend of mine that I always make a point to go visit whenever I make my way back to Cincy. He lives with a couple other great dudes, and it is always worth the 30 minute drive. They are a blast and guys that I feel completely comfortable around. It is nice be able to hang out and feel comfortable enough to just completely let your guard down. We just hung out and drank some really expensive fancy wine that they scored from 20 Brix, which is the place they are all chefs at. Now I know why fancy wine is expensive, so good.

Sorry for not following up on my goal of posting twice a week. My computer decided to die on me and was out of commission for almost 2 weeks. So I didn't do much shooting or posting to the blog. But now that I saved over $2,000 from Apple Care, and now have my computer back, I am determined to post more often. However, I digress.

This is Baker, we made some beer on Saturday, along with about half a dozen other guys. 60 or so gallons of Imperial Stout. It took the better part of the day. Sadly, it is not all mine, we split it up among the Brew Crew. The Brew Crew is a club that I am a member of that is dedicated to making your own beer, wine, and mead. We brew almost every week, and it is a great way to enjoy some tasty brews and have a good time. I am really excited about the Imperial, we are going to age it in an old oak barrel that was used for whiskey and wine. Should add some interesting flavors to it. Those guys aren't used to the fact that I carry my camera around on me a ton, so hopefully when they get used to it I can get some sweet brewing frames. I really enjoy doing it, and have learned so much from brewing with those guys.

Julia is a great friend of mine. I was fortunate enough to go to Scotland with her, and have known her since our stay down the hall from each other in Washington Hall freshman year. I am glad for our weekly cooking times and Arrested Development at her house, it is something I look forward to every week. It was a tradition that was long overdue.
